Bangladesh Seeks $4.32 Billion from Pakistan: A Call for Apology and Cooperation

Bangladesh's Financial Claims and Apology Request

Dhaka: On Thursday, Bangladesh brought up a financial demand of $4.32 billion from Pakistan, seeking its rightful share of assets from the undivided nation prior to 1971. Additionally, Bangladesh is requesting a formal apology for the atrocities committed by the Pakistani military during the Liberation War.

These matters were discussed during the Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) held in Dhaka, marking the first such meeting in 15 years.

The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin, while the Pakistani side was represented by Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch.

Bangladesh also requested $200 million in foreign aid that was allocated to East Pakistan during the devastating Bhola cyclone.

Jashim Uddin emphasized the need for Pakistan's cooperation to foster a strong and progressive relationship, urging the resolution of historical issues promptly.

He stated, "These issues must be addressed to establish a solid foundation for our relations."

Interestingly, reports indicate that the Pakistani representatives declined to comment on the meeting's outcomes.

During her visit, Baloch met with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain to discuss mutual interests.

Yunus highlighted the importance of enhancing ties with Pakistan to improve cooperation and explore trade opportunities, acknowledging existing challenges.

Baloch remarked on the necessity for both nations to capitalize on their potential, stating, "We have significant intra-regional markets that we should utilize. We cannot afford to miss opportunities repeatedly."

Following the FOC discussions, it was confirmed that Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will visit Dhaka on April 27-28, marking the first visit by a Pakistani Foreign Minister to Bangladesh since 2012.

The interim government has established a working group with the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka to finalize agreements for Dar's upcoming visit.
